제 개인적으로는 `texify`라는 용어가 아주 달갑지는 않습니다. 원래 `texify`는 `latex`을 몇 번 실행하고 필요하다면 상호참조를 모두 만들어서 완전한 결과물을 얻어내는 일련의 과정을 하나의 배치 프로세스로 처리하는 유틸리티의 이름이었던 것으로 알고 있습니다. WinEdt에서의 `texify`란 사실 `texify.exe` 실행명령을 부르는 것에 불과합니다. 간단한 한 예는 `latex -> latex -> makeindex -> bibtex -> latex -> latex` 이런 일련의 처리 과정을 단번에 실행해주는 것을 가리키는 듯하네요. ConTeXt에는 `texexec`라는 아주 유용한 명령이 있는데 이것은 바로 이런 과정을 모두 한꺼번에 처리해주는 것이지요. 양이 좀 많은 문서를 `texify`하고 있노라면 그 지루한 과정이 너무 지겨울 때가 있습니다. 사실상 완전한 최종본은 맨 마지막에 얻어지는 것일 뿐이므로, 장별로 부분컴파일을 하면서 작업을 진행하는 것이 더 효율적이라는 게 개인적인 생각입니다. `compile`에 대해서는 그럭저럭 허용되는 것 아닌가 싶습니다. 우선 다른 적당한 말이 없고, plain text의 input 파일을 DVI라는 이진코드로 바꾸는 과정이라고 생각한다면, 뭐, 그렇게 써도 괜찮은 것 아닌가 싶네요. ;) 제 WinEdt 설정에서는(WinEdt을 아주 많이 쓰는 것도 아닙니다만) `texify`를 아예 빼버렸고, 필요하다면 latex 명령을 두어 번 실행하는 방식으로 작업합니다. 그리고... 아주 좋은 비유인지는 모르겠습니다마는 latex.fmt를 불러야 latex 컴파일이 되므로 그것을 일종의 pre-compile된 라이브러리라고 생각해도 좋지 않을까요? --[Karnes]
